not with someone else's bargepole
I bought one of these from Argos last Christmas. It failed in January and Philips sent out a software update but it didn't cure the fault so the unit went back for repair. When it came back it lasted only a few weeks before playing up again. I eventually got around to sending it back to Philips again and it was away for just over a week. When it came back it lasted only a week before the fault reappeared. Just says"Starting" and none of the buttons do anything.Today I boxed it up and took it back to Argos for a full refund.

Philips PET723/05 7" PORTABLE DVD PLAYER
I ordered this DVD player and it was delivered the next day and for the price paid you cannot go wrong. Great customer service. It is by far the best purchase I have made for visiting grandchildren. At last no more fighting with Grandad over who watches what on the tv. The picture quality and sound are excellent even in the car on a long journey home. Very sturdy and compact takes up no room when not in use. I would highly recommend this dvd player.5

Can be made multiregion, quality not as good as PMPs
This DVD player is very stylish and sleek however the image quality can not really match up to any media players such as the Archos, Ipod, Zen, Iriver etc. as the resolution is simply not enough for the 7" screen. The player comes with a USB port to allow attachment of pen drives or card readers but it is only USB 1.1 not USB 2 so it is sloooow. I also had problems with the OK button not functioning on a number of DVDs so you should check that before buying. The player can be made multiregion- using the remote control press setup, down arrow, down arrow, right arrow, 212225 (the code will not be shown), left arrow, down arrow. The region code box should then be shown- enter 0 and press setup to save.7
Review for Philips HDR3700 DVD Player/Recorder/160GB HDD - Built in Freeview Digital Tuner:
Main problem is that despite having a good aerial and a freeview box that picks up all channels this device doesn't pick all the channels up. Putting my freeview box on pass through (i.e. as if it was a sat box) produces the same result - i.e. for instance ITV is viewable from my original box when connected direct to the TV but not when the signal is passed through this box. So, frankly useless.
Add to this the remote control is fussy with many small button and it can't obviously control my Philips TV for channel or more importantly volume. The complexity of the product also makes it easy to get lost and set the box to something you don't want - solution switch it off. When you switch it off it saves settings which can take a minute... plus side - appears to start up quickly and unit is pretty quiet.
In short; Disappointed. Recommended to avoid - stick to a freeview box and iPlayer and the like for the moment and save up for a better brand or freeview HD when it's out.

I bought this yesterday from a High St retailer as an impulse buy - and frankly it's going back tomorrow.Main problem is that despite having a good aerial and a freeview box that picks up all channels this device doesn't pick all the channels up. Review for Philips DVDR5500 - DVD Recorder With Freeview:
Historically, Philips have been one of the great innovators of the electronics industry, and I really do expect better from them. This machine is barely fit for purpose, and I should have taken it right back to PC World.
This Philips 5500 deserves NO STARS, but I must give it at least one before I can post my review.

It's a good job Philips don't make pacemakers
I can only concur with reviewer Ash. I've had all the problems he's mentioned. What really bugs me is having to hit the eject button about 20 times before the damn thing will respond. HDMI upscaling is rubbish too. Freeview channels work okay though.Historically, Philips have been one of the great innovators of the electronics industry, and I really do expect better from them. Great unit and great value
I have been very pleased with this unit. The only quibble is that the USB input will only play MP3 files, but most of my media is in WMA format, which it does not reccognise (converting it is a pain). It will, however, play both WMA and MP3 files on the same CD.17

Great...Oh yes
This is a great home cinema system, you really don't need 5 speakers to experience surround sound and excellent sound too, don't worry about the technical stuff you don't need to know about it, all you need to know is that it works. Large or small room it works, the sound comes at you from all angles, get this system and you will be pointing and laughing at the people with a 5 speaker system18
Review for Philips PET 700 Portable DVD Player with 7" Display:
Firstly £130 is a good price for the specs on offer, plus Philips is a brand I could identify with (obviously this doesn't mean other brands are inferior!).
I was very pleased with both the size of the unit and build quality. The picture quality is also extremely good (I sat in the back and watched DVDs whilst Hubby did the driving!).
As in a previous review my husband commented on the speaker quality, I had listened for this myself but didn't really notice it (maybe I was expecting worse?).
In the end I want to feel that I got value for my money and this does not dissapoint! Especially as (unlike a previous reviewer)I have been able to play other media on the unit, including region 1 DVDs with the instructions supplied on the Amazon website.

Excellent Quality
As a family we have to travel a way to visit relatives (up to 4hrs). This was bought with a view to keeping my son entertained and away from the soul destroying 'are we there yet?' syndrome.Firstly £130 is a good price for the specs on offer, plus Philips is a brand I could identify with (obviously this doesn't mean other brands are inferior!).

Review for Philips MCD988 - 2.1 DVD Home Cinema System - With 2 Disc Changer, HDMI 1080i Upscaling & DivX:
When the box arrived, my first thoughts were"oh my its HUGE" (and heavy!) However, on unpacking the box, all was crystal clear. Two free standing speakers, a rather large subwoofer and the main control unit.
When put in to place, this thing looks the business and delivers some very good sound indeed, with bass so deep it'll shake the foundations of your house if you want it to!
Have it connected via HDMI to my Sony Bravia 32s3000 TV with the audio connected via, funnily enough, the audio connectors! No problem with lag between the sound coming out of units speakers and my TV speakers - both play the sound at exactly the same time. The picture is clear and the sound is superb!
The sound from my PS3, which is connected to my TV via HDMI, is awesome really helping to immerse you in the gameplay!
The only problem I seem to have is that the Disc 1 sliding door once opened will shut automatically by itself in around 5 seconds - just enough time for me to change the disc, although having said that, I've been caught out a few times now!
This unit will play almost anything you throw at it, including DVD MP3 discs if you have them.
5 out of 5 stars as you really cannot fault it for the money! For less than £100, you really can't go wrong.

Nice bit of kit
Decided to get this 2.1 system instead of a 5.1 system as I didn't really want cables running along my floor/ceiling and wireless 5.1 systems cost a bomb! When the box arrived, my first thoughts were"oh my its HUGE" (and heavy!) Simply great
Simple idea, combine a DVD player and iPod dock and you have the best of both worlds all in one unit. Incredibly handy, just a shame the battery doesn't last a bit longer. Also the DVD player is multi-region, just google the part number for simple remote hack ;-)
